What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

Information you provide in the contact forms is sent to the webmatron (Sis. Nicole Lasher) via email. The form handler may save it in your browser to prevent sending duplicate emails. If you want it permanently deleted, simply close your browser, or use your browser options to delete form history and cookies.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are small files that save your activity while you browse this site.  These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

So we encourage you to use browser add ons if you prefer not to be tracked or prefer not to share your information with certain sites. If you are using Firefox, I recommend these add ons to protect your privacy.

Analytics

We keep general information, such as number of site visitors, number of hits on each file in the system, etc. to understand how the site is used.

Who we share your data with

We do not share your data with anyone on purpose, but we cannot control what shady activities other companies may engage in. Again, we urge you to use your browser’s privacy features and add ons to protect your privacy.

Plug-in Specific Privacy Information

iThemes Security

Security Logs

The IP address of visitors, user ID of logged in users, and username of login attempts are conditionally logged to check for malicious activity and to protect the site from specific kinds of attacks. Examples of conditions when logging occurs include login attempts, log out requests, requests for suspicious URLs, changes to site content, and password updates. This information is retained for 14 days.

Who we share your data with

This site is scanned for potential malware and vulnerabilities by Sucuri’s SiteCheck. We do not send personal information to Sucuri; however, Sucuri could find personal information posted publicly (such as in comments) during their scan. For more details, please see Sucuri’s privacy policy.

How long we retain your data

Security logs are retained for 14 days.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their own personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Your contact information

We do not share your contact information with anyone. We discourage public posting of any personal or contact information. Feel free to use aliases here, and to change your profile information if you used any social logins from services that required your contact information.

Your email address that you provide when creating your account or posting a comment is in our system, but not made public. If for some reason we are compromised and you begin receiving spam or other nastiness, and you suspect it is because you posted here, please contact us. We need to know so that we can investigate our logs and stop it.

Additional information

Any personal or identifying information that you post in the comments here is of course made available to the entire internet. Please use care and discretion when posting. If you made a mistake and need a comment deleted or edited, contact us and we will take care of it right away.

Sometimes in a crisis, people don’t think clearly, and post things they shouldn’t.  When someone has posted information that Sis. Lasher anticipates may cause trouble for the author or commenter, she reserves the right to edit it for safety and privacy.

How we protect your data

We use security plugins here such as Akismet and iThemes security to protect ourselves and our visitors from spam and shady practices.

What data breach procedures we have in place

We are hosted by AQHost.com, a very privacy oriented service. They have been around for over a decade, and through many issues, so they know what to look out for.

We are also using security software on this website to protect the site and its users from intrusive bots and fake spam users.

What third parties we receive data from

We receive data through our security plugins to block potentially malicious bots and spammers. These are sites that store a database with malicious and potentially harmful or grossly insecure IP addresses that have been compromised or hacked.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

If something appears to be malicious, it is blocked. If you are a real person who attempted to sign up, but were blocked, please contact us to send your information.

Industry regulatory disclosure requirements

You can get more information about General Data Privacy Regulation here.

If you notice a problem

If you begin to have problems with a user here, or notice some shady activity going on, or begin receiving strange or intrusive prompts for notifications or popups while visiting this site, contact us immediately.
